How Coaching Changed the Way I Lead
Years ago, I found myself at a crossroad, not necessarily in crisis, but aware that something needed to shift. I was managing teams, driving outcomes, and delivering results. But deep down, I knew there was more to leadership than just KPIs and strategy. I wanted to lead with intention, empathy, and clarity. That’s when I began my coaching journey.
Looking back, I can say this without hesitation: coaching changed me, not just as a professional, but as a person. It gave me a mirror and helped me understand not just how I manage people or projects, but how I show up in the world. It made me a better listener, a better communicator, and a more intentional decision-maker. But most importantly, it reminded me that leadership is not about having all the answers but about being open to growth, discomfort, and continuous self-reflection.
If I were to be honest right now, I’d say, coaching is not always comfortable and neither is growth. It asked me to be vulnerable, to share personal experiences, and to take an honest look at myself – the good, the bad, and the ugly. I had to face the gaps in my growth and recognise how I was holding myself back.
The truth is, development is never a one-size-fits-all journey. However, what is universal, is the need for a safe space – a place where you can think out loud, be challenged in a constructive way, and be supported as you grow beyond what you once thought possible. This is where the power of coaching lies. It doesn’t fix you but reveals your best self. It equips you with real-life coping tools, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and self-leadership strategies that actually work in your day-to-day world.
According to a recent study by the Institute of Coaching, over 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence, and over 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships, and communication skills. Closer to home, in South Africa, a survey conducted by COMENSA (Coaches and Mentors of South Africa) revealed that more than 60% of organisations using coaching services saw measurable improvements in employee engagement and leadership effectiveness. These numbers are proof that when it’s done right, coaching works.
But beyond the stats, I have seen the impact in myself and in everyone I have recommended coaching to. It creates more thoughtful leaders, better listeners, stronger teams, and ultimately, healthier workplaces.
Today, the leader I have become is more grounded, more self-aware, and more human. I don’t have to pretend to have all the answers. Instead, I ask better questions. I listen more intentionally. I lead with a greater sense of purpose.
To anyone considering coaching, whether you’re a manager looking to grow, a leader navigating change, or just someone wanting to understand yourself better, I can say that the journey is worth it.
At MIE, while our name is synonymous with background screening and verification solutions, we also offer coaching services designed to empower leaders and teams to grow in exactly these ways. It’s a lesser-known part of what we do, but one that reflects our belief that organisational success is built not only on verified credentials, but on people who lead with clarity, empathy, and purpose.
For those ready to take that next step, coaching might just be the most valuable investment you make in yourself and your organisation. Because when you combine the right skills with the right mindset, you don’t just tick boxes, but you lead with impact.
